The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Senior Judge Justice Shri Chandrashekhar to be appointed as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court. If the government approves, it will be the 49th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
The post will be vacant in April 2026 after the retirement of the current Chief Justice Justice Alok Aradh.

Law graduates from Delhi University
Justice Chandrashekhar took admission in law in Delhi University i.e. DU in the year 1989-1990. He obtained a LLB degree from DU’s Campus Law Center in 1993. Then on December 9, 1993, he was registered as an advocate in the Delhi State Bar Council. From this year, he started advocating.
Adoption in more than 3,500 cases in SC
Justice Chandrashekhar started his advocacy from Delhi’s Lower Court. 3 years later, he started practice in the Supreme Court. He remained in the profession of advocacy for 19 years. During this period, the Supreme Court advocated in more than 3,500 cases, including 140 reported judges.
Meanwhile, he was also a permanent legal advisor of Jharkhand State, AICTE, Bihar State Housing Board and Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
Justice Chandrashekhar was appointed as Additional Judge in the Jharkhand High Court on January 2013. Then, on June 2014, he became a permanent judge in the Jharkhand High Court. Subsequently, he was made the acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on December 29, 2023. He held this post till July 3, 2024.

In July 2024, Justice Chandrashekhar transferred to the Rajasthan High Court. Here he stayed till July 2025.
Became judge of Bombay High Court on July 2025
Subsequently, in May 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the transfer to Justice Chandrashekhar to the Bombay High Court. This recommendation was approved from the center on 14 July 2025. Then on July 21, 2025, he was sworn in as a judge in the Bombay High Court.
SC collegium recommended to make Chief Justice
On August 25, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Shri Chandrashekhar to be the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The recommendation has been sent to the central government. After this, a formal notification will be issued along with the approval of the President.

The Bombay High Court is one of the largest and prestigious high courts in the country. Its main bench is in Mumbai.
Justice Shri Chandrashekhar is currently the senior-free judge of the Bombay High Court. They can become Chief Justice according to the seniority.
