One-fourth of school children of the country, or 1 out of every 4 children, are taking private tuition in addition to school. This information has been revealed in the Comprehensive Modular Survey of the Central Government i.e. CMS report.
According to the report, 30.7% students in urban areas are taking private coaching while in rural areas this figure is 25.5%. A total of 27% of school students are studying in private coaching.

Survey conducted on 52 thousand families
The survey was part of the 80th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS). In this survey, data has been collected from 52,085 houses and 57,742 students across the country with computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) technology.
Expenditure on the education of urban children is almost doubled
In terms of expenditure, urban areas cost an average of Rs 3,988 per student annually. At the same time, this expenditure in rural areas is Rs 1,793. This difference increases at the senior secondary level. The average expenditure of urban students at senior level is Rs 9,950, while Rs 4,548 for rural students.
Only 1.2% students are studying on scholarship
95% of the students spent on school education said that the first major financial source of their studies is family members. This trend is the same in both rural (95.3%) and urban (94.4%) areas. Only 1.2% of the students reported that the scholarship of the government is the first major financial source for them.
Anganwadi education also included in the current survey
The 75th round of the previous major education survey NSS was done from July 2017 to June 2018. However, in the 75th round, Anganwadi centers were not counted under pre-primary education and private coaching was included in spending on school education. At the same time, this time in the CMS survey, Anganwadi was placed in the pre-primary category and the expenditure on school education and coaching has been recorded separately.
The biggest expenditure in studies is on tuition fees
The main objective of this survey was to estimate the average expenditure of families on school education and private coaching at the national level. The report said that the highest average expenditure on students in all types of schools was Rs 7,111 at a course fee. This was followed by an average of Rs 2,002 on books and stationery.
The expenses of urban families were found to be much higher than the villagers in all categories. For example, an average of Rs 15,143 was spent on course fees in urban areas, while in rural areas it was only Rs 3,979. The same difference is also in other expenses like transport, uniform and books.
