The 22 -year -old Prasanta Mandal, who hails from Malda, West Bengal, has been allowed by the Calcutta High Court to study MBBS despite having only 3.5 work fingers in both hands. It is a landmark ruling. After this decision of the court, Prasanta’s dream of becoming a doctor was once again alive. Some time ago a hospital in Kolkata called him unfit for medical studies.
Hand development stopped after polio
At a young age, Prasanta had a polio. After this, the development of his hands stopped. Despite this, his morale did not break. Prasanta completed his studies up to 12th and then also cleared the exam of NEET UG. His All India rank was 1,61,404 and Prasanta secured 3,627 rank in the PWBD category.
Hospital declares unfit
Prasanta had cleared NEET but the difficulties were not over yet. SSKM Hospital in Kolkata called him unfit for medical studies. The hospital said that without fingers it would not be able to use scissors and scalpels.
After this, Prasanta’s morale was definitely less but he did not give up. He reached the Kolkata High Court with his application. High Court Justice Biswajit Basu asked AIIMS Mumbai to re -evaluate the case. AIIMS Mumbai found that Prasanta’s condition is not a hindrance in his medical studies.
Court raised questions on hospital decision
The court ordered that Verification of Prasanta should be done and admission should be given to him under PWBD Kota. Along with this, the court also questioned the intention of SSKM Hospital. The court said why SSKM repeatedly rejects when the Medical Premier Institutes Disabled Candidates are considered eligible for medical studies.
The judge also mentioned such a case. He said that a candidate from Purulia was on a wheelchair, which was rejected by SSKM on the basis of disability. But Delhi Hospital considered him eligible and he was admitted to the court’s order.
