Sweden’s Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will announce the Nobel Prize for Chemistry today. This announcement will happen at around 3:15 pm.
Chemistry Nobel is given every year to those scientists who have made discoveries that improve life or the environment.
According to media reports, this year’s award can be given for discovery of chemicals in space (astrochemistry), making advanced batteries, special types of droplets in cells (biomolecular condensates) or accelerating chemical reactions (catalysis).
The winner will receive 11 million Swedish krona (Rs 10.3 crore), gold medal and certificate. If more than one scientist wins, the prize money is divided among them. The awards will be given on December 10 in Stockholm.
How will it be announced?
- The Royal Swedish Academy will announce the names of the winners in the Session Hall of the Nobel Academy in Stockholm.
- The Secretary General of the Academy reveals the names of the winners, the reason and impact of their search in a press conference.
- It can be watched live on nobelprize.org website, YouTube or social media.
Nobel Prize was established in 1895
The Nobel Prizes were established in 1895 and awarded in 1901. From 1901 to 2024, 229 people have been honored with this award in the field of medicine.
These awards are given on the basis of the will of scientist and inventor Alfred Bernhard Nobel. Initially, Nobel was given only in the fields of Physics, Medicine, Chemistry, Literature and Peace. Later, Nobel started being awarded in the field of Economics also.
According to the Nobel Prize website, the names of people nominated for Nobel in any field are not revealed for the next 50 years.
Nobel Prize to be awarded in 2024 for discovery of new protein
The Chemistry Nobel of 2024 was awarded to three scientists. David Baker created new proteins from the computer, which will be used in making medicines and vaccines. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper created a smart AI that can tell the shape of proteins.
Proteins help in every function in our body, from digesting food to fighting diseases. Baker opened the way for making medicines, vaccines and new things by making new proteins.
Hassabis and Jumper created an AI program (AlphaFold), which can easily predict the shape of proteins. This is helping scientists to make new medicines quickly.
