From 2018 to 2025, about 98 students have committed suicide in major educational institutions of the country. Of these, 39 were from IITs, 25 from NITs, 25 from Central Universities, and 4 from IIMs. Taking suo motu cognizance of the increasing student suicides, the Supreme Court had constituted a committee which was given the responsibility of conducting a survey to find out the cause of this problem.
The committee has informed the Supreme Court that most of the educational institutions are not serious about this problem. More than 57,000 educational institutions of the country are not cooperating in the survey being conducted by the committee, which mostly includes IITs, IIMs, AIIMS and NITs.
3,500 responded; 57,000 did not reply
The Supreme Court has expressed strong displeasure over this attitude of the institutions. Senior advocate Aparna Bhatt told Justice J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan’s bench was told that despite sending four reminders for the survey, 17 IITs, 15 IIMs, 16 AIIMS, and 24 NITs have not responded. Only about 3,500 institutions have responded to the survey so far.
The bench said, ‘This entire effort is being made in the interest of the students. All institutions are expected to provide full cooperation and assistance in this work, so that the National Task Force can prepare its report.
The bench directed the Central Government, ‘We request the Central Government to take this issue very seriously and motivate all the institutions to cooperate in this survey again.’
The court said, ‘We are giving one last chance to the institutions. If they do not cooperate, we may have to give such orders which they will not like and this will also have a negative impact on the image of their institutions.
The court has constituted a task force under the chairmanship of retired judge Ravindra Bhat. This includes psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and experts in education policy. The objective of the task force is to identify the reasons for student suicide on campus and suggest ways to prevent them.
In March, the court had ordered to form a task force
In March this year, the Supreme Court had ordered the formation of a ‘National Task Force’ (NTF) to prevent mental health-related problems and incidents of suicide among students.
The court had said that universities should not only become learning centers but also play the role of institutions responsible for the welfare and development of students.
