The Central Board of Secondary Education i.e. CBSE has approved the proposal of open-book assessment in 2026-27 class 9 from academic session. This decision was taken after a pilot study. Teachers were also supported during the study.

Each term will apply to 3 pen-paper exams

Open-book assessment will be applied for 3 pen-paper exams of each term in class 9. This assessment will mainly cover language, mathematics, science and social science. It will be allowed to use resources like books and notes during the examination.

Promoting critical thinking

In this, the questions will be designed in such a way that they are based on analysis, application and critical thinking instead of rote. For example, questions may include case study, data analysis or solution to real life problems.

It corresponds to the National Curriculum Framework for School Education i.e. NCFSE, 2023, which is based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Open-book exam took place in 2014

CBSE has also worked on open-book assessment in 2014. During this period, in class 9, along with Hindi, English, Mathematics and Social Science, the final exam of Economics, Biology and Geography of Class 11 was tried.

If this system is successful in class 9, CBSE may consider applying it in class 10 and 11–12 as well.
