The convocation of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was held on August 17 in Vellore.
Vice Chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Dr. G. Vishwanathan said that education will be the most important contributor to making India a developed nation by 2047. He said that at present 4.3 crore students have enrolled in higher education. Under the new education policy, it has to be increased to 8 crore. This requires new classrooms, structures and more funds.
Vice Chancellor Vishwanathan said this said this in Vellore at the 40th convocation of VIT. Supreme Court Judge R.K. Mahadevan was the chief guest. He gave graduation degrees to the students. A total of 8,310 students got graduate, 2,802 post graduates and 451 got PHD degrees. 203 students were honored for their ranking and 68 talented students were given gold medals.

Sandeep Rai Rathore, Director General of Tamil Nadu Police Academy, was given his PhD in Disaster Management. On this occasion, hostels were named after Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Jagdish Chandra Bose. Shivkumar Sundaram, CEO of Times of India was the special guest at the ceremony. VIT Vice President Shankar Vishwanathan, Shekhar Vishwanathan, G.V. Selvam, Trustee Ramani Balasubramaniam, Executive Director Sandhya Painterrdy, Assistant VP Kadhambari S. Vishwanathan, Vice Chancellor V.S. Kanchana Bhaskaran, Associate VC Parthasarathy Malik and Registrar T. Jayabharat were also present.
Vice -chancellor Dr. Vishwanathan said- only 3% spent on education
- There is a demand to spend 6% of GDP on education for a long time, but only 3% is spent. State governments bear 75% education expenses, while the central government is only 25%. Tamil Nadu is at the forefront of the country by spending 21% budget on education.
- The central government spends only 2.5% of its budget of its ₹ 55 lakh crore on education. Currently 4.3 crore students are in higher education, and under the new education policy, it has to be increased to 8 crores. This requires new classrooms, structures and more funds.
- Indian universities are behind in the global rankings. The VIT is currently in the top 500, but the target should be top 100 or 200. Money, tax evasion and corruption are major diseases of the country. Every year ₹ 8-9 lakh crore tax evasion and ₹ 6 lakh crore are lost in corruption. India’s per capita income is $ 2,900, while Japan’s $ 35,000. This difference can be reduced by promoting higher education.

Justice Madhavan said that adopted modern technology of VIT and appreciated social contribution. Referring to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Tirukkural, he said that true success is the same, which has honesty. There has been a big change in India’s economy in the last 20 years. FDI means foreign investment has increased, but is still lagging behind countries like China. Globalization has increased employment and higher education opportunities. He asked the students to continue to learn, befriend books and create their character with discipline and faith.
