Pandit Chhannulal Mishra died on Thursday morning on the morning of 2 October. He was a famous Hindustani classical singer awarded by Padma Vibhushan. He was 89 years old. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the social media platform x and said, “I was very sad to hear the news of his death.” While paying tribute, he also expressed condolences to the family members.

Father was the first teacher
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was born on 3 August 1936 in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. He was born in a normal Brahmin family. The atmosphere of the village was religious and cultural, where festivals, bhajan-kirtans and folk songs were echoed. This atmosphere pulled him towards music.
There was also an atmosphere of music in the family, father Pandit Badri Prasad Mishra was also a good singer. Therefore, he had made music his life since childhood. Chhannulal ji took early music education from his father.
He then went to learn from Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan, who was a well-known master of the grocery house. After leaving a small village, he stepped into a large cultural city like Varanasi. There was a deep tradition of music in Varanasi, where a stream of music flowed in ghats, temples and cultural events. This atmosphere became the real school of music for him.
Padmabhushan Thakur took music education from Jaydev Singh
Chhannulal Mishra’s struggle was also no less. It was not easy to learn music along with studies and writing at that time. The real turn in his life came when Padmabhushan Thakur Jaydev Singh recognized his extraordinary talent. It was from here that a deep Guru-disciple relationship started, where Thakur Jaydev Singh gave him music education and guidance in a traditional way and Mishra became his special disciple.
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra studied music in Varanasi since childhood and continued to serve Varanasi through his music and hymns.
Mastery in classical music
Pandit Mishra was famous for his special style of singing, especially classical thoughts and East Ang Thumri, a sub-style of Hindustani classical music. That’s why he was known.
The specialty of his singing was in deep feelings and sweetness, due to which he got respect both in the country and abroad. He is considered the major singer of the East Ang Thumri and also released several music albums. He sang many hymns and ghazals which became popular not only in India but also abroad.
Air, Doordarshan Artist
Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was the top grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan. He had an important presence in many government cultural institutions. He was also a key member of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
He also met Prime Minister Modi several times, because his residence and PM’s parliamentary seat was in the same region, Varanasi.
His entire family is associated with music and is still advancing the tradition of Indian classical music. His son-in-law Pandit Anokhe Lal Mishra was a well-known tabla player and his son Pandit Ramkumar Mishra is also gradually earning his name in tabla playing.

He received several more big awards – such as the Shiromani Award for Sur Singar Parliament, Naushad Award, Yash Bharti Award, Bihar Sangeet Shiromani Award, Honor at London Music Festival and “Jewel of Thumri”.
