Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met PM Narendra Modi on Monday, October 13. During this, discussions were held on business, energy, technology, agriculture and cooperation between the two countries. Anita has come to India for the first time on a 3-day official visit.
During this meeting, PM Modi congratulated Canadian PM Mark Carney and talked about looking forward to the upcoming meetings. The Prime Minister’s Office said that this visit of Foreign Minister Anand will further strengthen the relations between the two countries.
Mother was from Punjab and father from Tamil Nadu
The full name of Canada’s Foreign Minister is actually Anita Indira Anand. Both his parents were Indian physicians. His mother Saroj D. Ram was from Punjab, while his father S. V. Anand was from Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, he also has two sisters in his family.
Anita’s Indian parents came to Canada in the 1960s for a better life. As soon as he came here, he took a car on rent and set out to find the right place for his family. Then, they settled in Kentville, population about 5,000, where Anita was born in 1967.
Anita was smart in studies since childhood. After schooling she went to Queen’s University. It was from here that he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Political Studies. In 1989, he also received a gold medal in Political Studies.
Was a professor at Queen’s and Yale University
Before joining politics, Anita pursued her legal career from 1994 to 1997. Then in 1997, she entered the world of teaching. Anita was first an assistant professor at Western University and later at Queen’s University. She was promoted at Queen’s College itself and became an Associate Professor in 2003. He has also served as a visiting lecturer at Yale University.
On September 17, 2019, the Royal Society of Canada awarded Anita the Yvan Allaire Medal. He received this medal for bringing changes in the way boards of directors work around the world.
Came into politics in 2019
Anita entered politics in the year 2019. She became a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. Then this year she was elected MP for the first time. Since becoming an MP, his political career has progressed rapidly.
First woman of South Asian origin becomes Defense Minister
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played an important role in the Government of Canada as Minister of Public Services and Procurement. At the same time, he handled responsible tasks like vaccine procurement and distribution. Due to his efficient work, he was made the Defense Minister in 2021. With this, she became Canada’s first female Defense Minister of South Asian origin.
Become foreign minister in 2025
Anita was given the responsibility of Foreign Minister in the year 2025. While holding this post, she is busy strengthening Canada’s relations with other countries. She is considered a supporter of diversity, transparency and cooperation.
The bitterness between India and Canada will go away
This is Anita’s first official visit to India after becoming the Foreign Minister. The purpose of this visit is to bring the relations between the two countries back on track. Relations between the two countries deteriorated in 2023, when the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of being involved in the murder of Canadian leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had rejected it. After this both the countries had stopped visa services.
Both the countries have agreed on many issues in this meeting. Anita Anand said Canada wants a ‘long-term relationship’ with India, with a special focus on trade, technology, energy and climate.
In the statement issued after the meeting, it was said that both the countries will respect each other’s concerns. Both the countries have jointly prepared a roadmap to increase economic cooperation, in which special focus will be on mineral resources, artificial intelligence and clean energy.
