Enrollments in Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country have reached the lowest in the last 5 years. On Monday, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan gave this information in the Lok Sabha.

In the Education Session 2020-21, the counting of admissions in Kendriya Vidyalayas was 1.95 lakhs. It has been reduced to 1.39 lakhs in the current academic session 2024-25 every year.

Students studying in KVS also decreased

There are a total of 1280 Kendriya Vidyalayas in the country. Counting of children studying in them has also declined during this period. The count of students in the 2020-21 session was 13.9 lakhs, which has come down to 13.5 lakhs this year.

KVS are for children of government jobs

Kendriya Vidyalayas were mainly established for children of central government employees with transferred jobs. They are counted among the most prestigious government schools in the country.

The decline in enrollment is seen at a time when the central government has approved the opening of 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas in December 2023. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told Parliament that all these projects, including the expansion of an existing school in Shivamoga, Karnataka, will cost around Rs 5,872 crore.

Center has raised funds for KVS

Meanwhile, the funds from the government for the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan have also increased continuously. It was Rs 6,437.68 crore in 2020-21, which has increased to Rs 8,727 crore in 2024-25.

The Union Ministry of Education has recently expressed concern about declining enrollment in government schools. During the discussions on the mid-day meal scheme earlier this year, states and union territories were asked to check the reasons for the decline in enrollment at primary and upper primary levels and submit a detailed report on the subject.
