Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner, died on Monday. He was 114 years old. He was walking on a highway near his village Vyas Pind in Jalandhar, Punjab when a truck ran away after hitting him.
He was then admitted to the nearby hospital where he died during treatment. After this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted and paid tribute to him. Fauja Singh was called his fans ‘Turban Wala Hurricane’, ‘Running Baba’ and ‘Sikh Superman’.

Could not last till the age of five years
Fauja Singh was physically weak in childhood. His legs were very thin and that is why children used to tease him as ‘Danda’. When he started walking, he could not travel long distances due to weak legs. Although slowly he started running and defeated the players with him easily, but after the Indo-Pak partition, Fauja Singh stopped running.
Fauja Singh’s wife died in 1992. This year, his daughter also died during delivery. In August 1994, Singh’s youngest son Kuldeep died in an accident. Fauja Singh started running again to handle the misery caused by losing his own. In 1990, he moved to England to live with his eldest son.
Arrived for training in three pieces suits
At the age of 89, Fauja Singh started taking marathon training in England. His coach said that on the first day of training, he had reached for training in a three -piece suit. After this, the coach first had to work on his dress.
After this, in the year 2000, Fauja Singh ran the first marathon in London. His coaches say that he used to participate 20 km easily and insisted on running the marathon.
Actually, the marathon was of 26 mile (42 km). Fauja Singh felt that it was similar to 26 kilometers. In 2004, when he completed the marathon in 6 hours 54 minutes, a new record was set. Its previous record for the runner who crossed the age of 90 was 54 minutes more.
Name could not be recorded in Guinness World Record
Fauja Singh did not have a birth certificate. Actually, when he was born, a birth certificate was not made in India. Therefore, his name is not recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. However, his birth year 1911 has been written on Fauja Singh’s British passport. The Guinness record was said to see the age written on the passport but was not accepted. Fauja Singh was congratulated by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth on the 100th birthday.
