The results of the first two rounds of the PM internship scheme were disappointing. After this, the central government conducted a study from top institutions. In this, four flaws like the company’s location, the age limit were revealed. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has made a road map to remove these flaws and implement the scheme.

The new plan will be handed over to the PM office and the scheme will be implemented in 2026-27 with a budget of more than 10 thousand crore rupees. Currently, its budget is 380 crores. At the same time, the minimum age limit of the intern will be reduced from 21 to 18 years. The stipend will also increase. The internship period can be 6 months to one year.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the plan in the 2024-25 budget speech. Under this, paid internships were to be given in the top 500 companies of the country of 1 crore youth in 5 years. Its registration was also held till 15 November. However, it was stopped due to flaws.

There will be 4 major changes in PM internship scheme

  1. Right now the age limit is 21 to 24 years. Will now leave minimum 18 years and maximum companies.
  2. The internship period can be 6 months to one year.
  3. The stipend will increase. PG, PhD holders will also join.
  4. In 2024-25, 2000 crore was kept for this. It was reduced to Rs 380 crore and the expenditure was Rs 21.10 crore. In the next year, an arrangement of Rs 10,831 crore has been made on it.

4 big flaws were revealed in the plan The government told the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs- IIM Bengaluru, Delhi School of Economics, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs studied the results of the first two phases. Four major reasons for low participation were revealed in the feedback of the companies and the response of the candidates.

  1. The company’s location is important. The first choice for the candidate was 5 to 10 km away.
  2. The internship period is longer than the normal skill program.
  3. Candidates were not interested in the offers.
  4. ITI, Polytechnic received requests to reduce age limit.

Round-1 result of the plan 686 districts, 1.80 lakh people, 6.45 lakh applications. 80,000 internship companies offered. 28% of women candidates received applications. Only 60,000 candidates accepted the offers. Only 8700 candidates joined internships.

Round-2 results 745 districts, 2.14 lakh people, 4.55 lakh applications. 41% of women candidates, among the total applicants. 327 companies offered 1.18 lakh internships. The selection process of the second round is still going on.
