Senior leader of Communist Party of India (Maoist) Bhupathi has surrendered. Mallajolu Venugopal Rao alias Bhupathi along with 60 of his workers surrendered before the Maharashtra Police on the night of 13 and 14 October. Bhupathi was considered the mastermind of several major attacks, including the attack on CRPF jawans in Dantewada in 2010. There is a reward of more than Rs 7 crore on him in Maharashtra, Telangana and Chhattisgarh.

father was a school teacher
Bhupathi was born in a Telugu Brahmin family. He is also known as Abhay and Sonu Dada. Bhupathi’s father was a school teacher. After schooling in Peddapalli, he graduated in commerce from Government Degree College, Karimnagar. It was during this time that he first joined the Radical Student Union.
Poet became Maoist after being influenced by Varavara Rao
According to the Times of India report, Bhupathi joined the Maoist faction under the influence of revolutionary poet and thinker Varavara Rao during the Emergency. Then joined the People’s War Group (PWG) in the early 1980s.
Subsequently, on September 21, 2004, a new organization was formed with the merger of the People’s War Group (PWG) and the Maoist Communist Center (MCC). The organization was named Communist Party of India i.e. CPI (Maoist). Then Bhupathi started playing an active role in it.

Bhupathi is the younger brother of Maoist commander Mallajolu Koteswara Rao alias Kishanji, who was killed in 2011.
Became spokesperson of CPI (Maoist) in 2010
Bhupathi also planned to create a new guerrilla zone in South India. Then created a guerrilla zone in the hills of the Western Ghats from Goa to Kerala. Subsequently, after the death of spokesperson Cherukuri Rajkumar (Azad) in 2010, Bhupathi took over as the official spokesperson of CPI (Maoist). Also managed the publication division of the organization.
Was angry at not being made General Secretary
In fact, on May 21, 2025, CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Gaganna alias Basav Raju alias Nambala Keshav Rao was killed by security forces in Abujhmad area. After his death a new general secretary was to be appointed. Sonu was hopeful that considering his family background and his dedication towards Naxalism, he would be made the new General Secretary of the organization. Although Devji’s name was also included in this race, in which Devji won.
Bhupathi was angry with the organization since then. Meanwhile, he contacted his wife Tarakka, who also encouraged her to surrender. Bhupathi’s wife Tarakka had surrendered in Gadchiroli a few months ago. Currently she is living in Gadchiroli. In such a situation, Sonu chose Gadchiroli to live with his wife after surrender.

On Wednesday, October 15, Bhupathi formally surrendered before Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Gadchiroli.
The surrendered Maoists have also handed over their 54 weapons to the police, which includes 8 AK-47s.
Upgraded Guerrilla Warfare Training Manual
As a Politburo member, Bhupathi conducted guerrilla operations in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Telangana. He managed all types of propaganda through PLGA’s mouthpiece ‘People’s March’. While heading the PLGA Central Military Commission, Bhupathi upgraded and modified the guerrilla warfare training manual.
Bhupathi was the mastermind who created the rebel base in Indravati National Park, Chhattisgarh. It was considered the second headquarters of the Maoist movement. This base was used for grouping, supply of weapons and making strategic plans.

Bhupathi is also accused of conspiring to kill 76 CRPF soldiers in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh in 2011.

Security forces believe Bhupathi was the mastermind of several major attacks, including the attack on CRPF jawans in Dantewada in 2010. 76 soldiers were martyred in this attack. He faces several charges like murder, attempt to murder, attacks on security forces and arson. There is a reward of more than Rs 7 crore on him in Maharashtra, Telangana and Chhattisgarh.
So far 1,522 Maoists have surrendered
According to government figures, a total of 1,522 Maoists have surrendered since the Maoist movement started in Maharashtra in 1980. At the same time, 4,123 Maoists have been arrested and 347 Maoists have been killed in the operation.
