Tamil Nadu School Education Department will conduct Teachers Eligibility Test i.e. TET thrice in the year 2026. The exams will be held in January, July and December 2026. This examination will be mandatory for all teachers teaching classes 1 to 8 in government and government-aided schools.
Decision taken due to Supreme Court order
This decision has been taken after the Supreme Court order which said that teachers will have to pass TET within two years to keep their jobs and remain eligible for promotion. Only those teachers who have less than 5 years left for retirement will not have to pass TET.

First TET exam in January 2026
Teachers Recruitment Board i.e. TRB has been given the responsibility of conducting these examinations. The official notice for the first exam will be released in the last week of November 2025.
The first phase TET Paper I and II exam can be conducted on 24 and 25 January 2026. Notices for July and December examinations will be released next year.
According to officials, District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) will also organize special coaching for teachers to help them prepare for the exam.
Jobs of more than 1.7 lakh government teachers are in danger
According to the data of the School Education Department, more than 1.7 lakh teachers teaching in government schools of the state have not yet been able to pass the TET exam. Teachers of private schools will also come under the purview of this order. The Supreme Court has also made it clear that no one will be given any exemption and passing TET is a mandatory condition for promotion.
The state government has also filed a review petition in the Supreme Court to clarify whether this order will be applicable to teachers already teaching or not. This may affect those teachers who have been teaching for many years without passing TET.

Could clear only 4.5% till now
Let us tell you that since the implementation of TET in 2012, this examination has been conducted 6 times in Tamil Nadu. 37.28 lakh candidates participated in these examinations, but only 1.68 lakh i.e. 4.5% were able to pass it.
